Detroit's Mayor Mary Sheffield is bringing a new face to City Hall's upper echelon, naming Jamie K. Walters as the new Senior Director of the Mayor’s Office Communications. Walters, a valuable player with over two decades in strategic communication and programming, will now be steering the communication strategy directly under Sheffield's administration. The key focus will be on developing resident-centric messages to propel the Mayor's key initiatives and draw in more partnerships and growth for the city, according to the City of Detroit.
An alumna of WDIV Local 4, where she managed a team of 34 and served as Creative Services & Programming Director, Walters is not unfamiliar with the Detroit landscape. Her work encompassed major local and political events, such as America's Thanksgiving Parade and Ford Fireworks, and the political show Flashpoint. Her background showcases a blend of media, nonprofit, and municipal sector relationships throughout Detroit. "My administration is going to be about providing all Detroiters with pathways to a better quality of life. We will drastically improve services and make resources available in neighborhoods so that Detroiters stay and raise families here," Mayor Sheffield explained, per the City of Detroit. "For our efforts to be broadcasted and utilized, we need to develop creative and innovative ways to communicate to our residents," she continued.
Mayor Sheffield also revealed plans to re-engage former residents with incentives and opportunities while attracting new visitors and partnerships—bolstering support for the local workforce as well as the small business community. "Jamie’s presence will allow us to think strategically about marketing the Detroit we all know and love to the world," Sheffield noted, as per the City of Detroit, emphasizing Walters's deep connection to and understanding of the city. "She has spent her lifetime rooted in Detroit and has established herself as one of the most effective and respected communications professionals anywhere. I am proud to have her on our team."
