Jefferson Parish residents have the chance to safely dispose of hazardous household materials at an event hosted by the Jefferson Parish Department of Environmental Affairs. The collection initiative, set on January 17, is established in collaboration with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office LASER Division and Legacy Environmental, and will take place in LaSalle Park's parking lot by the Shrine on Airline, according to the Jefferson Parish.
Running from 9 a.m. to noon, the event is aimed to address the proper disposal of items like paints, cleaners, batteries, and pesticides. Disposing of these materials inappropriately, such as pouring them down the drain or dumping them on the ground, can contaminate the environment and harm human health, as mentioned on the Jefferson Parish's official site.
Acceptable materials for the event include a range of products: mercury-containing devices, paint and lawn care items, household cleaners, chemicals, lighting components, small arms ammunition, pyrotechnics, safety equipment, electronic waste, helium tanks, and small propane tanks. However, items such as non-residential waste, medical waste, propane tanks larger than 16 oz., explosives, and common recyclables like paper and cardboard will not be accepted, as reported by the Jefferson Parish.
Residents looking to dispose of automotive waste such as motor oil and car batteries have alternative options. These items can be recycled year-round at Parish Drop-Off Sites located in both Metairie and Marrero. For additional information on the household hazardous materials collection event, interested parties can reach out to the Department of Environmental Affairs at (504) 731-4612.
