Jefferson Parish has opened warming centers ahead of an expected freeze. Starting today at 2 p.m., Terrytown Playground (641 Heritage Ave., Terrytown) and the Alario Multi-Purpose Center (6900 Saints Drive, Metairie) will provide shelter for residents and pets until Monday, next week at 9 a.m. Pet owners should bring a carrier, as per the Jefferson Parish's Facebook post.
The Jefferson Parish Human Services Authority will help individuals living outdoors find temporary shelter. Residents needing information or transportation can call the Jefferson Parish Emergency Operations Center at (504) 349-5360.
The Extreme Cold Warning from the National Weather Service is in effect from Saturday through Sunday morning, with wind chills expected in the single digits and teens. Officials warn the cold can be dangerous to people, pets, pipes, and plants, and strong northerly winds may create hazardous boating conditions. Residents are urged to use the warming centers and take precautions during the freeze.
