As Jefferson Parish braces for a significant drop in temperatures and potentially dangerous wind chills, authorities are taking measures to safeguard residents against the impending freeze. With forecasts from the National Weather Service hinting at a cold snap starting Sunday evening, January 25, and stretching through Tuesday, January 27, the parish has decided to set up warming centers for those in need of refuge from the cold.
The two designated locations, Terrytown Playground and the Alario Multi-Purpose Center, are opening their doors to the public and their pets, as announced in a social media post by Jefferson Parish Government. These warming centers will start welcoming residents at noon on Sunday and will provide a warm place to stay until the severe weather passes on Tuesday. Pet owners are asked to bring a pet carrier for their animals.
In an effort to reach those most vulnerable, the Jefferson Parish Human Services Authority is taking steps to assist individuals living on the streets to find temporary shelter during this time. With the fierce chill poised to sweep through the region, the safety of all residents, especially those without homes, becomes a critical concern.
For residents requiring additional information or assistance in getting to the warming centers, the Jefferson Parish Emergency Operations Center is available at (504) 349-5360. Such measures are part of the parish’s commitment to community safety and underscore the importance of proactive responses to severe weather conditions. Residents are encouraged to reach out and make use of these services during such a critical period when the bitter cold poses health risks, as per Jefferson Parish.
