The Kannapolis Fire Department is set to host a traditional washdown ceremony for its new Fire Engine 41, offering the public a chance to engage directly with their local first responders. The event, scheduled for 4 p.m. on Tuesday, January 13, will take place at the Fire Station 4 located at 328 Stewart St. NW. Attendees will help welcome the new engine to the fleet with a hose-down and wipe, paying homage to the department's rich history and traditions.
According to the city's recent announcement, the ceremony is more than just an introduction of the new fire engine. It represents a longstanding firefighting tradition, wherein a new truck is lovingly cleaned and pushed into its bay by firefighters and community members alike. This ritual harks back to an era when horse-drawn engines required manual labor to return to the station after a call. The washdown ceremony promises a hands-on experience for visitors who will participate in the cleaning process.
Light refreshments will be provided following the ceremony, ensuring an atmosphere of camaraderie. It also offers an opportunity for residents to meet their local firefighters and learn more about the new Engine 41. The fire department extends its invitation openly, encouraging all members of the community—young and old—to partake in this special event and strengthen the bond between the public and the fire service.
