Karen Read’s 2021 Lexus LX 570, linked to the death of her boyfriend John O’Keefe, will be auctioned on January 30 by JJManning Auctioneers. Bidders must present a valid ID and proof of $20,000 in bank funds to register, according to Boston.com.
The Lexus SUV has about 12,000 miles and was held by law enforcement during Read’s indictment and trials. She was acquitted of murder and manslaughter but convicted of operating a vehicle under the influence, CBS News Boston reports. After being returned, the SUV underwent repairs, including removing a rodent infestation and replacing the damaged right taillight, which had been a key piece of evidence in the trial.
Despite its controversial past, the vehicle, detailed and repaired by JB Auto Care, is in "great condition." Its history may boost its auction price above the average for a similar model. Justin Manning, President of JJManning Auctioneers, told Boston.com, "I think that the interest level is going to be absolutely through the roof."
Read remains involved in a civil lawsuit filed by O'Keefe's family, seeking to hold her responsible for wrongful death. She has also accused investigators and witnesses of conspiring to frame her. Proceeds from the auction will go to Read, according to Bill Brusard, the mechanic who helped repair the Lexus, keeping the vehicle linked to the ongoing legal battles and its infamous history.
