An officer-involved shooting took place at a Knoxville apartment complex on Tillery Road, resulting in the death of a 46-year-old man and the safe recovery of an endangered 15-year-old girl. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) has taken the lead on the case following the incident, which occurred on Wednesday morning, confirmed by the Knoxville Police Department in an official release.
The investigation commenced after detectives were tipped off about the location of the missing girl, who was believed to be in the company of the man, a non-relative. Before the intervention, warrants were issued for the man on multiple charges, including hiding a runaway child, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and theft of a firearm, as mentioned on Knoxville Police Department's official release.
According to the same report, the Special Operations Squad arrived at the scene around 10:25 a.m., where they announced their presence before entering the apartment with the property owner's consent. Inside, they encountered both individuals, and during the attempted detention, the man reportedly drew a firearm and aimed it at the officers. In response, officers fired multiple shots, fatally wounding him. The teen was unharmed during the altercation, and no officers sustained any injuries.
The situation escalated when, during the confrontation, an officer was attacked by the missing juvenile with a large knife. The officer, who was equipped with a helmet, escaped the strike unscathed. The juvenile now faces charges for the assault. Following standard protocol, the TBI is conducting a thorough investigation, and the officers involved have been placed on routine administrative leave. An administrative internal review will also be carried out by the Office of Professional Standards.
