The new year in Knoxville began with a tragic incident as one man was killed in an overnight shooting. According to a post from the Knoxville Police Department, the event occurred in the early hours of January 1, 2026.
Officers were dispatched to Neyland Drive after a report of a gunshot victim was received, just after the clock had signaled the beginning of a new year. An unresponsive 60-year-old local man was found with at least one gunshot injury, and despite being rushed to the UT Medical Center, he was pronounced dead. The University of Tennessee Police Department, working in concert with Knoxville Police Department officers identified, and later KPD Community Engagement Response Team officers located, a vehicle of interest at a Shell gas station on E. Summit Hill Drive.
The homicide investigation is still in its initial phase, with detectives actively working the case. Even as they interrogated two individuals from the suspect vehicle, no arrests or charges connected to the shooting have been announced.
