A Lake Zurich burglary suspect holed up in his home for hours on Saturday before finally surrendering to police, bringing a tense standoff to a quiet stretch near the village’s south shore. Negotiators and tactical officers cycled through the scene for much of the day before the man gave himself up, and authorities said he was taken into custody without further incident. No other injuries were reported.
How the Break-In Unfolded
Officers were first called around 2:17 a.m. Saturday for a burglar alarm at the Casey’s Convenience Store at 650 S. Rand Rd. Police said someone got inside by firing a gun through the store’s glass door, and the business appeared to have been burglarized, as reported by CBS News.
Standoff at the Suspect’s Home
Investigators later tracked the suspected activity to a home in the 200 block of Whitney Road. When officers went to the address at about 11 a.m., the resident refused to come out, according to police. Because he was believed to be armed and barricaded, the Northern Illinois Police Alarm System Emergency Services Team responded, and nearby residents were evacuated, per the Daily Herald.
Surrender and Arrest
After several hours of negotiation, the man eventually surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident, police said. Authorities identified the suspect as 47-year-old Merrick A. Pollack, who was charged with armed violence, aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, and burglary, according to CBS News.
Charges and Next Steps
Local reporting said the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved the charges and that Pollack faces multiple counts, including three counts of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon. The reporting also said he was taken to a hospital for minor injuries and remains in police custody. The incident is still under investigation by Lake Zurich police, per Cardinal News.
Neighbors and Officials
Neighbors described a heavy police presence throughout the late morning and afternoon, with officers blocking off parts of the area and warning people to stay away while the situation unfolded. Lake Zurich officials said police would likely remain in the neighborhood for some time as investigators process the scene and follow up on the case, according to the Daily Herald.
