Residents of Lemon Grove were on high alert Monday after an attempted robbery occurred involving a young student on their way to school. The incident, which transpired in the 7900 block of Golden Avenue, took place just before the start of the school day, at around 8:00 AM, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office.
A man reportedly accosted the 11-year-old student, who was en route to Lemon Grove Academy, demanding the child's backpack and giving chase as the frightened student fled toward the safety of their school buildings. However, fortunately, the suspect abandoned the pursuit and left the scene before law enforcement arrived. Nobody was injured in the frightening encounter. The Sheriff's Substation in Lemon Grove is now handling the ongoing investigation as they continue to look into the matter.
The troubling event has placed pressure on local authorities to provide reassurances to the community about student safety, especially during times when children are traveling to and from school. Parents and guardians are advised to remind their children about the importance of being aware of their surroundings and to report any suspicious activities to a trusted adult or directly to law enforcement.
