The community of Lemon Grove is grappling with concerns for children's safety following an unsettling incident this past Monday, when an 11-year-old student was targeted in an alleged attempted robbery on their way to school. The Hoodline reports that the confrontation occurred near Lemon Grove Academy, in the 7900 block of Golden Avenue, around 8 AM, just before class start times.
The San Diego County Sheriff’s Office has since acted swiftly, announcing the arrest of 30-year-old Damari Waller,18 the suspect in the chase that troubled the community. Via a FOX5 San Diego update, we learned that Waller allegedly demanded the child's backpack and pursued the student as the student made a dash for the safety of the school. The arrest was made yesterday, concluding a period of intense concern among local residents and parents.
A statement issued by the San Diego County Sheriff's Office acknowledged the public and media's aid in the investigation leading to Waller's apprehension, on charges of attempted robbery. This collaboration between the community, law enforcement, and media denotes a unity of purpose towards children's well-being and security.
The alarming event has placed a magnifying glass on safety precautions for young students in transit to educational institutions. According to a Hoodline article, the sheriff's office underlined that no injuries were reported after the episode, which saw the suspect leave the area before deputies arrived. This fortunate outcome, however, does little to assuage the anxiety that laces the morning air as parents prepare to send their children off to school in the dawn's light.
