Chaos briefly ensued at Covington High School in Louisiana after a video depicting what seemed to be a student in possession of a firearm circulated amongst the school community, prompting an immediate response from local law enforcement. According to a statement released on the Covington Police Department's Facebook page, the incident occurred on Friday, and led to a lock down of the premises as a precaution while the situation was assessed by officers and a specialized unit.
The investigation revealed that the video, which quickly began to spread creating concern among students and staff, was actually recorded in the fall of the previous year. Nevertheless, the police were quick to ensure all were safe, proceeding to immediately lock down the campus and conduct a thorough sweep. During the procedure, one suspect was taken into custody and will face charges. The object in question was eventually determined to be a bb gun rather than an actual firearm, calming fears of an immediate threat. "The Covington Police Department takes every threat seriously, regardless of when or where the information originates," said Chief Michael Ferrell. "The safety of our students, faculty, and staff will always be our top priority," as stated by the Covington Police Department.
