Several vehicles parked outside restaurants in Los Altos were broken into this past weekend, according to the Los Altos Police Department. Vehicle owners were not harmed, but some cars did sustain damage, and officers said the incidents remain under active investigation.
Police Reported Details
In a Facebook update, the Los Altos Police Department said the break-ins happened in restaurant parking areas and urged drivers to strip their cars of visible valuables and double-check that vehicles are locked while detectives follow up on leads. The department again emphasized that vehicle owners were not harmed, though some cars were damaged during the burglaries.
Peninsula Pattern
Police noted that the Los Altos break-ins mirror a broader pattern of quick-hit auto burglaries on the Peninsula, where thieves can move rapidly through multiple lots. In a previous case, officers arrested two suspects after a victim used a stolen device to track them, KTVU reported. Officers recovered laptops and backpacks from the suspects' vehicle in that earlier incident, underscoring why authorities keep warning drivers not to leave electronics or bags in plain sight.
How To Reduce Risk
Law enforcement agencies recommend a few basic habits for cutting down the chances of a break-in: park in well-lit areas, lock all doors and windows, and either place valuables in the trunk or take them inside with you. The FBI lists the same precautions on its motor vehicle theft prevention page and notes that reporting thefts quickly improves the odds of getting property back, the FBI says. In Los Altos, residents are advised to call 911 in an emergency or use the Los Altos Police Department's non-emergency number listed on the city's police page to report tips or suspicious activity.
Police Seek Tips
Officers are asking anyone with video footage or information related to the weekend break-ins to contact the department and to avoid confronting suspected thieves directly. Investigators said community tips and camera footage often play a crucial role in solving these cases.
