In a notable stride against cryptocurrency scams, Lunenburg Police Officer Bradley McNamara's keen investigation has resulted in the substantial recovery of over $109,000 in stolen funds. After receiving a complaint from a Worcester County resident who fell victim to a Bitcoin scam using a local cryptocurrency ATM, Officer McNamara embarked on a meticulous pursuit of justice.
Working in collaboration with the New England State Police Information Network (NESPIN), which has a specialization in the knotty world of cryptocurrency fraud, Officer McNamara was able to track the funds to a Tether digital wallet. Containing assets exceeding the initial report of approximately $13,000, the wallet's holdings surprised many, uncovering a staggering sum. A NESPIN analyst lauded the achievement, stating, "The first Tether seizure by a local law enforcement agency in the state of Massachusetts was completed by a school resource officer in Lunenburg," as reported by the Lunenburg Police Department.
The considerable scope of McNamara's work didn't cease with the tracing of assets. His dedication led to the filing of an array of search warrants and subpoenas in partnership with both the Worcester County District Attorney's Office and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. These efforts facilitated authorities to effectively freeze and seize the defrauded funds. According to the Lunenburg Police Department, the civil asset forfeiture process is now underway by the District Attorney's Office to return the money to the identified victims, who number at least 13.
Lunenburg Police Chief Jeffrey Thibodeau has publicly commended Officer McNamara, recognizing the lengths to which he went to support the scam victims and recover their money. Having seized all $109,000, Chief Thibodeau's pride in his team's values was evident: "He went out of his way to support the victims and did everything possible to help recover their money. I also want to thank our public safety partners for their collaboration throughout this investigation. We are fortunate to have an officer who truly represents the values of the Lunenburg Police Department." This commendation came through the Lunenburg Police Department. Officer McNamara's exceptional efforts in unraveling the cryptocurrency scam have set a precedent for local law enforcement, and he is slated to be honored at a future commendation ceremony for his considerable accomplishments.
