A tragic wrong-way collision on State Route 70 near Striplin Road in Sutter County claimed the life of a man and left an infant, along with the female driver of the errant vehicle, hospitalized last night, as per the California Highway Patrol's reports. According to ABC10, the violent encounter occurred before 7:30 p.m. when a white Volkswagen Tiguan, traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of the highway, struck a red Toyota Corolla head-on.
The aftermath of the crash was immediate and devastating. The Volkswagen's driver suffered major injuries and was transported to a hospital. Following the accident, an infant also in the vehicle was taken to a local hospital; their condition was not disclosed, while the male driver of the Toyota Corolla was pronounced dead at the scene by the authorities. "Before the crash, a witness reported seeing the Corolla make a U-turn and drive the wrong way near Striplin Road," CHP communicated to the public.
Fox40 reported on the ongoing investigation of the incident by the CHP, who have not yet determined if alcohol or drugs played a role in the event; however, conditions at the time did include patches of fog which might have contributed to the catastrophic episode. The precise condition of the infant, roughly 1-year-old, remains unknown as they continue to undergo evaluation post-accident.
