A tragic turn of events unfolded in Danvers, Massachusetts this afternoon as a house fire claimed the life of a man, confirmed by fire officials. The blaze, which ignited at a single-family home located at 36 MacArthur Boulevard, was reported at approximately 12:30 p.m., with early reports indicating that an individual was feared to be trapped within the structure. NBC Boston reports that despite the valiant efforts of first responders, the man was later pronounced deceased.
Witnesses first identified the emergency, noticing smoke billowing from the eaves and windows, prompting the urgent call to firefighters. Heavy smoke challenged the fire crews upon arrival. "Crews saw heavy smoke and made an aggressive attack against flames inside of the house," Fire Chief Brian Barry stated in an interview obtained by Salem News. Following a neighbor's report of a missing resident, fire officials were prompted to launch a thorough search within the property.
The identity of the victim, a man around 60 years old, was not released to the public awaiting notification of next of kin. Firefighters, after managing the first hurdle of smoke and flames, located and evacuated the man from the home. Unfortunately, he succumbed to the events that unfolded inside the house. Firefighters, battling more than just the fire, had to request assistance from a Bobcat plow to clear snow obstructing emergency access in front of the residence, according to Chief Barry's statement to Salem News.
As the community seeks answers to the origin of the fatal incident, the investigation into the cause of the fire remains ongoing. Salem News notes that the fire's genesis appeared to start "about 10 feet inside of the front door," Chief Barry explained.
