The Maple Grove Police Department has made its stance clear regarding recent federal immigration activities within the community. In a public statement on social media, the department emphasized it focuses on enforcing state and local laws, leaving the responsibility of federal immigration law to the federal government. This announcement comes at a time of growing concern and confusion among local residents about the involvement of city police in the operations of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Maple Grove Police clarified that their officers will not actively participate in ICE operations. However, they may be present to aid in ensuring public safety, especially in circumstances like protests or public gatherings, which could arise in response to federal actions. "Our officers will work to de-escalate situations but will not participate in enforcing immigration law," the Maple Grove Police Department stated. It's critical for the public to understand that although the Maple Grove Police Department is present during federal immigration activity, they don't play a direct role in these operations.
Assistance from local police may include crowd control as part of ICE operations, a role they are legally required to fulfill. Their aim is to maintain the peace and safeguard all community members, regardless of the nature of the federal operation ongoing. When it comes to First Amendment rights, the department stresses the importance of keeping such expressions within the realm of lawful activity to avoid unnecessary escalations.
ICE, as an independent federal law enforcement agency under the Department of Homeland Security, operates separately from local jurisdictions. The Maple Grove officers, as reiterated by their statement, have no authority over federal agents and are barred from interfering with federal operations. "For Maple Grove Police Department and the public, it is unlawful to obstruct ICE actions or activities," the department added. They also advised that bystanders witnessing immigration enforcement stay safe and remain peaceful, being sure to follow the guidance of local officers tasked with maintaining safety and access to public areas.
