Marietta Theatre Company is leaping into the new year with a show that fuses comedy with a touch of horror and the unforgettable tunes of rock 'n' roll. The local nonprofit theatre organization has announced "Little Shop of Horrors" as their season opener, with performances scheduled from January 22–31. This darkly funny musical revelation tells the tale of Seymour, an unassertive flower shop worker, who happens upon a plant that has developed a rather unsettling craving for blood.
The show, featuring the renowned works of composer Alan Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman, known for their contributions to "Beauty & the Beast," "The Little Mermaid," and "Aladdin," has been a fixture in the world of entertainment for over three decades. Currently, to also capture Broadway audiences in New York, the Marietta Theatre Company is set to bring this performance closer to home. "With its mix of dark humor, unforgettable songs, and high-energy performances, Little Shop of Horrors will help us set the tone for a season of fan-favorite, Broadway-style titles," Katrina Stroup, Marietta Theatre Company President, said in a statement released by the Marietta government.
The production is to be helmed by director Michael Stewart, previously known for "Bonnie & Clyde" and "Ghost: The Musical." Along with Stewart, Vickie Zuffoletti serves as Assistant Director, Chance Harbin is handling the role of Music Director, Nico Johnson as Stage Manager, and Leah Boresow Groover takes the reins as Choreographer. The team aims to reproduce the passion and vibrancy of Broadway, offering a cultural experience to the local community who might not make it up to the big city theaters.
