Mid-afternoon traffic at Market and Larkin in downtown San Francisco came to a hard stop yesterday when a two-vehicle crash left a car flipped onto its roof in the middle of the intersection, tangled up transit, and sent two people to be treated for minor injuries. Firefighters and medics swarmed the scene while city officials urged people to avoid the area as crews worked to clear the wreckage.
The San Francisco Fire Department said crews were dispatched to the collision at 2:43 p.m. and arrived to find one vehicle overturned in the intersection, Lt. Mariano Elias told SFGATE. As of 3:18 p.m., medical teams were treating two people for minor injuries, according to Elias. Officials have not yet released details on what led up to the crash.
Transit Disruption On Market Street
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency reported on social media that inbound F-Market streetcars were holding in place while outbound F-Market cars were being turned back toward the Ferry Building, according to SFGATE. Riders were urged to use the Market Street subway between Van Ness and Embarcadero stations and to plan for delays. Muni service along Market remained disrupted while crews cleared the intersection and waited for a tow to arrive.
What To Expect And How The Scene Was Handled
City firefighters and emergency medical crews secured the crash site and coordinated with traffic control to keep bystanders and passing vehicles away from the overturned car while they worked. Lt. Mariano Elias serves on the department’s public information team, which handles media communications for incidents like this, according to the San Francisco Fire Department. This story will be updated as police, transit officials, or other city agencies release more information.
