The National Weather Service in Memphis warns that "dangerous travel conditions persist across the mid-south due to ice, freezing fog and snow," creating hazardous roads and nearly impossible driving in some areas. With "sub-freezing temperatures and power outages increase cold weather risks," authorities advise residents to avoid travel when possible and to keep emergency supplies like food, water, and a flashlight if travel is unavoidable, according to the National Weather Service.
Motorists are reminded to watch for "black ice," a nearly invisible danger on roads, and to "exercise extreme caution" during any necessary travel. Residents are also urged to use safe heating practices, protect pipes from freezing, conserve energy, and check on vulnerable members of the community, as reported by the National Weather Service.
A Freezing Fog Advisory is in effect "until 11 AM CST this morning" in the Mid-South. The fog can "make driving conditions hazardous" and create a "thin layer of ice over most bridges and road surfaces." Drivers are advised to slow down, use low beam headlights, and keep extra distance. Updates are available on the National Weather Service website and local news outlets.
