Reports of shots fired near The English Center in Miami led to a brief lockdown at the adult education campus yesterday, according to Miami-Dade County Public Schools officials, the school, primarily serving adult learners and offering a GED program, was secured due to police activity in the vicinity that was not related to the institution as stated by WSVN.

The response, which came after calls to the police around 11 a.m., featured a scene where a Honda sedan showed signs of potential gunshot damage with a shattered rearview mirror and police K-9 units searched for shell casings, during the time, the lockdown caused panic among students and parents with some gathered outside awaiting information about their safety and the status of their loved ones in the center, students inside also watched the unfolding police investigation from the school's windows, tension palpable as details emerged slowly and fragmentarily.

One individual, thought to be the probable source of the gunfire, was detained by police, City of Miami District 4 Commissioner Ralph “Rafael” Rosado confirmed, "One individual was determined to have been likely the culprit, and this situation has been brought to a close. No one was hurt," Rosado elucidated, this statement was obtained by WSVN.

Local residents expressed their concerns, as Mike Martinez, an area resident who was at a nearby park when he spotted a suspicious group and alerted authorities, he recounted the chilling moments leading up to the incident, saying, "They would cover their face every time I was looking at them. I knew they were up to no good," before hearing a succession of gunshots, this according to a WSVN interview.

While the immediate threat seemed to have passed, many surrounding neighborhood residents and onlookers remained shaken; Claudia Ramirez, expressing her unease, told reporters, "It’s very concerning because you don’t know what’s going on or if your life is at stake or what or why," her words mirrored by another resident who thought the incident was a shootout, as per WSVN coverage.

Although the lockdown was quickly lifted, the event is still under investigation by Miami Crime Unit detectives, who continued to question several individuals, no formal arrests had been made by yesterday afternoon, early reports of the incident had been initially posted out by ABCMiami18.
