A Miami man, identified as Mark Alex Natera, 37, stands accused of orchestrating a near $1 million embezzlement, victimizing his former employer and its parent company. As reported by NBC Miami, Natera leveraged his position as a senior software engineer at REEF Technology LLC to illicitly funnel company funds into his personal accounts.
The Miami Police Department's Financial Crimes Unit claims that an organized scheme was concocted by the accused to redirect payments from both REEF Technology and Vessel Operating HoldCo LLC, the former's parent organization, into his control. The fraudulent activities were reported to have occurred between November 2023 and October 2024. A different publication, Local 10 News, highlighted that detectives connected the diverted assets to Natera after meticulous examination of various bank records.
The arrest followed a year-long investigation into the misuse of company resources. Natera allegedly tampered with banking data on the company's payment platform, allowing customer remittances destined for REEF to be rerouted to accounts and cards under his possession. In a statement obtained by NBC Miami, it is detailed that the activities resulted in a collective loss of approximately $914,000 to the involved companies.
Authorities made the arrest after acquiring an arrest warrant, with Natera facing multiple charges, including an organized scheme to defraud, grand theft, and unauthorized access to a computer system. According to a Local 10 News interview, his initial court appearance came with a bond set at $120,000, supplemented by a request for a Nebbia hearing, designed to ensure the legitimacy of the bail money source.
REEF Technology, a provider of a proximity network dubbed Ulysses, connects local neighborhoods with a broader range of goods and services, while Vessel Operating HoldCo LLC assists in the business operations. Natera had been part of this ecosystem since April 2021, with responsibilities that included integrating REEF's products with the Square Point of Sale program prior to his activities coming into legal question.
