Minneapolis is set to honor the enduring impact of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a range of events, including a flagship celebration at the MLK Recreation Center on Monday, January 19, from 6:30 to 8 pm, as announced by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. According to their bulletin, the evening will feature community advocate Kenneth Foxworth as the keynote speaker, with performances from the local youth and young-adult choir Known MPLS.
The event also serves a dual purpose, presenting the Living the Dream Award to Cynthia Bryant, a leader lauded for her decade of impactful work at Loring Park. Free light refreshments will punctuate the event, inviting attendees from all walks of life to engage and reflect.
In conjunction with the MLK Day festivities, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board is encouraging the community to support a food drive. Non-perishable food items can be dropped off at any MPRB recreation center through January 19. Since its inauguration in 2009, the drive has collected over 15,000 pounds of food, with this year's contributions going to YouthLink and Avenues for Youth, two organizations committed to helping vulnerable young people.
Moreover, the Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association is hosting its 28th Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. celebration at Powderhorn Recreation Center. Taking place on the same day, starting at 10 am and concluding at 1:30 pm, the event opened to all ages, promotes community cohesion and remembrance through a series of thoughtful programs.
