A tragic event unfolded at Canyonlands National Park when a mother and her six-year-old son were found dead, with initial investigations pointing toward a homicide and suicide. San Juan County Sheriff Lehi Lacy disclosed that the bodies were discovered early morning on Jan. 8, after park rangers were called to investigate a "suspicious vehicle" reported by park service employees. The child was found unresponsive inside the car while their mother was located deceased outside the vehicle, according to KUTV.
Preliminary findings suggest the grim sequence of events, as the two had previously been reported missing by the husband of the woman, their father, in Colorado on Jan. 7. Despite the horrific nature of the case, authorities have assured that there is currently no threat to the public. After responding to the scene located along the Shafer Trail, the park rangers provided emergency life-saving efforts to the child until they could be taken to a local hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival, ABC4 reports.
Sheriff Lacy, deeply moved by the incident, shared, "This is a heartbreaking tragedy, and our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family during this incredibly difficult time," as per KUTV. While speaking to the diligence with which investigators are approaching the case, the specifics of the family's identity have been withheld out of respect. The bodies have been sent to the medical examiner's office for further examination to glean more insight into the exact nature of their deaths.
