As Multnomah County prepares to honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., local government officials have announced that most county offices will close in observance of the national holiday. According to a social media post from Multnomah County, the closure on Monday, Jan. 19 will affect a variety of services including health clinics, tax services, and library operations.
Specific offices taking the day off include the Multnomah County Health Department and Health Center clinics, as well as Student Health Centers, and telemedicine services. Additionally, the Multnomah County Division of Recording, Assessment, and Taxation will not be available to provide in-person, email, chat, or phone services. The county library, and animal services will also be non-operational. These closures will allow staff and the community alike, to reflect on the civil rights movement and the impact of Dr. King's life work.
Such holidays are more than mere pauses in the bureaucracy; they are communal moments for remembrance and education. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s enduring legacy reminds us of the strides taken towards justice and equity, and the work that still remains. His vision for a nation where individuals are judged by the content of their character, rather than the color of their skin, remains a fundamental goal for Americans to pursue.
Normal business operations across Multnomah County will resume on Tuesday, Jan. 20. Residents who rely on the aforementioned services will want to plan accordingly, ensuring that any pressing needs are addressed before the long weekend. The county's brief hiatus is a reminder that the wheels of progress must sometimes pause, in acknowledgment of the paths forged by leaders like Dr. King.
