On a day dedicated to recognizing the courage and commitment of law enforcement officers nationwide, Multnomah County Sheriff Nicole Morrisey O'Donnell bestowed the agency's first National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day Service Award upon two distinguished deputies for their exceptional work in public safety. As documented by the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, the award highlights the dedication of these individuals in their efforts to secure and serve the community.

The award presentation, held on January 9, coincided with National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. During the ceremony, Sheriff Morrisey O’Donnell emphasized the importance of the occasion, "This is a day to pause, reflect, and to thank our law enforcement professionals here in Multnomah County and across the country," as reported by the sheriff's office. Echoing this sentiment was the recognition of MCSO's broad service spectrum, including notable contributions such as patrols, civil enforcement, investigations, and collaboration with other law enforcement entities.

Deputies Jeffrey Wass and Kyle Beam were lauded for their proactive enforcement in 2025, which involved the recovery of nearly 60 firearms collectively, and the seizure of an array of illegal possessions valued around $400,000. In addition, their efforts led to the confiscation of body armor and more than 10 pounds of controlled substances. This tally contributed to the 415 firearms seized from 219 calls for service that year, marking a significant increase in firearm recoveries by the MCSO.

According to the statement from Sheriff Morrisey O'Donnell, "Each firearm removed from illegal possession represents potential harm avoided, a conflict interrupted, and a life possibly saved." The deputies' extensive experience was further highlighted, noting that both Wass and Beam joined MCSO as lateral hires, indicating their prior law enforcement accreditation from other agencies. Furthermore, the Oregon State Sheriffs' Association acknowledged Deputy Wass's expertise through an award presented at the OSSA winter conference last December.

In accompaniment to the press release, the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office provided the media with photographs from the award ceremony, for use with proper credit. A video from the event, along with footage from a patrol shift in 2025, was also made available, giving further insight into the deputies' commendable service that warranted such recognition.
