A man who was shot on Chicago’s Southwest Side died early Monday after being dropped off at Holy Cross Hospital by people who took off before police arrived, authorities said. He had a single gunshot wound to the back of the head and was pronounced dead shortly after reaching the hospital.
Chicago police said the victim was brought to Holy Cross around 4:10 a.m. in a black SUV. The people in the vehicle left after dropping him off, and detectives are still trying to piece together where the shooting actually happened. The man’s exact shooting location remains unknown, and no one is in custody, according to ABC7 Chicago.
Hospital drop-offs complicate investigations
When gunshot victims are rushed to hospitals by friends, relatives, or passersby instead of waiting for paramedics, it can leave detectives scrambling. With no clear crime scene to lock down and potential witnesses driving away, crucial evidence can be lost in the shuffle.
Holy Cross has seen this pattern before. In one prior case, a 17-year-old boy was left at the hospital in July 2025 and later pronounced dead after being shot, the Chicago Sun-Times reported. When people scatter before officers can secure an area, it can slow down evidence collection and drag out already tough investigations.
What the police say and next steps
Chicago police have not released many additional details and have not publicly identified the victim. Detectives are continuing their investigation, and no arrests have been announced, according to ABC7 Chicago. This story will be updated as authorities release more information.
