Last week, the quiet winds of Nantucket were disrupted by the clamor of a drug bust, involving a 62-year-old resident accused of trafficking cocaine. Edward Gillespie was arrested last Thursday, as reported by the Barnstable Police Department via social media, after allegedly being caught with a kilo of the narcotic in Hyannis, setting sail to bring the drug over the sea back to Nantucket.
The arrest was conducted at approximately 11:00AM by the Barnstable Police Detective Unit, after rigorous investigation identified Gillespie as a supplier ferrying drugs between the mainland and the island. In pursuit of the trade's thread, authorities secured and executed a search warrant for Gillespie's Nantucket home, where they discovered more narcotics and evidence of trafficking, all with the collaboration of the Nantucket Police Detective Unit, the United States Coast Guard, and the local DEA office.
The search unveiled a significant cache: approximately 1,141 grams of cocaine, 68 grams of Amphetamine pills, and around $10,000 in US currency, affirming the detectives' suspicions of Gillespie's illicit activities.
Following his apprehension, Gillespie was charged with Trafficking Cocaine over 200 Grams and subsequently arraigned in the Barnstable District Court. "Gillespie was held pending a dangerousness hearing," as stated by the Barnstable Police Department. The cache of drugs seized from Gillespie's residence has led the Nantucket Police Department to pursue additional narcotics trafficking charges in Nantucket District Court.
