
A tragic wave of pedestrian fatalities has struck New Bedford, Massachusetts, with the latest incident occurring yesterday evening. A 67-year-old man was struck and fatally injured by a car at the intersection of Route 6 and Pleasant Street around 5 p.m. He was transported to a local hospital where he tragically succumbed to his injuries, as reported by NBC Boston. The identity of the man has yet to be publicly disclosed.
The driver of the involved car stopped to try to aid the victim, indicating a remaining presence of community amidst the chaos of the accident. The crash is currently being investigated by multiple authorities, including the Massachusetts State Police, the New Bedford Police Department, and the district attorney's office. This incident marks the second pedestrian death in New Bedford in as many days, adding to the city's growing concerns over roadway safety.
Just one day before, a 33-year-old woman named Antonio Cola Olmos was fatally hit by a run-and-run driver. She was leaving a midnight service at her church on Acushnet Avenue when the tragedy occurred. In response, the New Bedford Police are escalating their efforts to safeguard the city's streets. According to a Boston 25 News report, officers will be ramping up after-dark enforcement in an effort to prevent further such incidents.
