The New Orleans City Council’s Government Affairs Committee will hold confirmation hearings for two of Mayor Helena Moreno’s appointments. The hearings are scheduled for today at 10 a.m. in the City Council Chambers, evaluating Dr. Jennifer Avegno for Director of the Department of Human Services and Charline Gipson for City Attorney, according to the city’s website.
The meeting will also introduce potential new deputy mayors: Michael Harrison, Renee Lapeyrolerie, Jenny Mains, and Kevin Ferguson. Mayor Moreno will provide remarks endorsing her selections and highlighting their qualifications for these roles, signaling her plan to assemble a team capable of managing the city’s governance and policy priorities.
Chief Administrative Officer Joseph Giarrusso is expected to attend, supporting the Mayor’s agenda and providing insight into the administration’s direction. The hearings allow candidates to present their qualifications publicly, ensuring transparency and due process.
The confirmation of Dr. Jennifer Avegno and Charline Gipson is significant, as they will oversee key areas of social services and legal affairs in New Orleans. Council President JP Morrell will chair the hearings, guiding the process and upholding the Council’s oversight responsibilities.
