New Year's morning turned tragic along West Ben White Boulevard when a 43-year-old Austin man died after a single-vehicle crash on the service road.
Officers were called around 9:26 a.m. on Jan. 1 to the 2400 block of the westbound W. Ben White Blvd. service road, where a pickup truck pulling a trailer had crashed. Austin-Travis County EMS tried to save the driver at the scene, then took him to South Austin Hospital. He was identified as 43-year-old Nickolas Paul Marchioni and was later pronounced dead at the hospital, according to local reporting from CBS Austin.

In a traffic fatality notice, the City of Austin said officers were dispatched to the westbound service road and opened an active investigation into the single-vehicle collision. The release identifies Marchioni and states the crash is being investigated as Austin’s first fatal traffic crash of 2026. Officials emphasized that their initial assessment is still in progress and that details could shift as more evidence comes in.
CBS Austin reported the same basic timeline, noting that Austin-Travis County EMS attempted resuscitation at the scene before Marchioni was transported to South Austin Hospital. The station also reported that the pickup was hauling a trailer and that Marchioni was the only person in the vehicle.

The Austin Police Department's Vehicular Homicide Unit is leading the investigation and has not yet released a cause for the crash. According to the City of Austin, anyone with information is asked to call APD's Vehicular Homicide Unit at 512-974-8111.

One previous deadly crash and the city's response were documented in a prior deadly crash on Ben White. The repeat pattern of severe collisions on and near Ben White has meantthat first responders are no strangers to major scenes along that stretch.
The investigation into the Jan. 1 crash remains open. APD has said it will release more information as it becomes available and is urging anyone who witnessed the wreck or has relevant video to come forward to help piece together what happened.
