Newport, Oregon, is reeling from a chaotic series of events after a resident fatally shot a man in the midst of a stabbing attack, leading to the uncovering of another victim who had been stabbed to death just blocks away, according to police statements.
Authorities were first summoned to the grisly scene before 1 a.m. last Friday, with a resident of Northwest Grove Street reporting a violent altercation at their doorstep, as per a report by KATU. The resident witnessed a man being stabbed, retrieved a weapon for self-defense called 911, and upon returning fired at the assailant, an action which resulted in the suspect's death at the scene.
The initial stabbing victim was rushed to the hospital and remains in critical condition, news corroborated by both KGW and KPTV. In a subsequent discovery that may be tied to the earlier altercation, officers found a second man stabbed to death near North Coast Highway and Northwest 19th Street; the Lincoln County Major Crime Team is handling the investigations and they have assured the public that there is no ongoing threat.
While details have been scarce regarding the connections among those involved, the police have yet to determine if the assailant and the two stabbing victims were acquainted, or what prompted the brutal attack, leaving a community searching for answers in the wake of violence that shattered the early morning calm. Police urge anyone with information to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation.
