The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has announced some lane restrictions on US 60 (Grand Avenue) at 163rd Avenue starting late on Tuesday, Jan. 20. The squeeze begins at 9 p.m., easing up by the early hours of Wednesday, Jan. 21, at 5 a.m. So expect delays, detours, and a bit of the ol' stop-and-go dance if you're traveling during these hours.

Drivers traveling southbound on US 60 who need to turn east will have only two left-turn lanes available. However, the left-turn lane from westbound US 60 to southbound 163rd Avenue will be closed, with flaggers on site to assist drivers through the intersection. For those turning from westbound US 60 onto northbound 163rd Avenue, only one right-turn lane will be open. Eastbound US 60 drivers will also be impacted, as the left-turn lane onto northbound 163rd Avenue will be closed, with flaggers directing traffic to allow left turns, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

All the traffic changes are part of a planned upgrade: a new eastbound US 60 left-turn lane onto northbound 163rd Avenue is being added, complete with its own left-turn signal arrow. The new signal could be activated as early as Wednesday morning, Jan. 21. Officials say the temporary disruption is short-term, and the new turn lane should open by early February, restoring smoother traffic flow.

ADOT has provided detailed information about the project, including a sign-up option for email updates and traffic alerts. Drivers are encouraged to stay alert in the work zone, follow flagger directions, and use caution while merging.

Officials also recommend allowing extra travel time or avoiding the area if possible to reduce congestion and delays.
