Last evening, residents near the corner of Mall Drive & Riverside Drive in St. George, Utah, witnessed the all-too-common sight of emergency vehicles responding to a vehicular accident. The St. George Police Department reported on social media that the incident occurred around 6:35 PM when a Hyundai, headed north on Mall Drive, collided with a stationary Mazda at the intersection. According to the St. George Police Department, the driver of the Hyundai was distracted by his phone moments before the crash and was unable to stop in time, leading to the impact and resulting in the Hyundai catching fire.
Miraculously, despite the severity of the incident, no injuries were reported. The police statement highlighted the fact that there were no injuries, but the Hyundai driver faced consequences for his actions; he was cited for careless driving. The St. George Police Department utilized this incident as a reminder of the dangers of mobile phone use while driving, ending their report with a call to action: "Drive smart. Drive safe."
While smartphone-related distractions are an increasingly alarming trend on the roads, it's a relief when such incidents don't result in physical harm. However, the economic and emotional toll of these events can still be significant. The charred remains of vehicles serve as a stark reminder of what's at stake when drivers divide their attention between the road and their devices.
