An off-duty Caldwell County deputy was tragically shot and killed after an incident at a north Austin nightclub this past weekend. The shooting occurred at Club Rodeo, located at 9515 North Lamar Blvd., early Sunday morning, as first reported by CBS Austin. Austin Police Department (APD) officers, called to the scene after 2 a.m., found the deputy with significant trauma to his body. He was quickly transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The deputy, later identified as Aaron Armstrong, served with the Caldwell County Precinct 3 Constable's Office since October 9, 2024. His death was confirmed Sunday afternoon following the early morning shooting. Armstrong had been working an off-duty security position at the time of the incident. The Austin Police, unfolding the layers of this tragedy, have apprehended a suspect with the help of multiple law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Marshals Lone Star Fugitive Task Force, at 3:45 p.m. Sunday, according to FOX 7 Austin.
Local community members reacted to the shooting and shared their perspective on the area. John Dahlberg, an early riser setting up at the nearby flea market the morning after the shooting, arrived to find his space interrupted by a crime scene. He recalled, "Cops had everything taped off and blocked off, and they were doing what they do," in a statement obtained by FOX 7 Austin. Others expressed concerns about the recent safety of the area. A flea market trader known as Easy recounted, "I done rode through after they closed, and I could sometimes see guys fighting. I also heard gunshots."
Dahlberg, when asked about the club's long-standing presence and recent incidents, said, "There's been a nightclub here for over 30 years, different nightclubs, rock, country. Just recently it’s what’s been happening here. It’s this area, they need to redo this whole area," according to the FOX 7 Austin interview. APD has urged witnesses or anyone with information, especially those with cell phone or social media footage of the event, to step forward and contact their Homicide Tip Line or submit tips via the Capital Area Crime Stoppers.
The Austin community, now bearing the weight of this sudden loss, waits as APD promised to provide more details in a news conference scheduled for Monday afternoon. Law enforcement is actively piecing together the circumstances that led to the fatal shooting, seeking assistance from the public to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the preceding events.
