In a move that has kept Portland's streets clear of troops, Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield stood firm against a proposed National Guard deployment by former President Trump. Trump's comments on December 31st suggested a militarized response to civil unrest in the city, but Rayfield's legal stance ensured that such actions were not taken.
Ringing in the new year with a defense of constitutional rights, the Attorney General's office emphasized the victory of the law over politics. Even caught in the bureaucratic crossfire, the National Guard members ended up not setting foot on Portland’s contentious battlegrounds. “The law prevailed and Portland never saw troops on its streets. This outcome shows that standing up for the Constitution works. We’re grateful for the professionalism and service of the Guard members caught in the middle of this legal fight," Rayfield stated.
The Attorney General's office also extended its appreciation to the would-be mobilized troops, recognizing the strain placed on military personnel and their families during periods of domestic uncertainty. "We look forward to seeing them return home to their families and communities soon," Rayfield said, highlighting the human element at the heart of the issue.
In the face of potential future federal encroachments, Oregon's legal team remains steadfast. Prepared to take action should a similar situation arise, the state of Oregon and its Attorney General have signaled a clear commitment to uphold constitutional protections against unauthorized troop deployment. “If the federal government attempts to revisit this effort, we are prepared to respond — again — in court,” Rayfield told the public, ensuring his constituents that their civil rights would be guarded with vigilance.
