It's the story of one classic creamery's flavors living on through another, as Rick's Ice Cream in Palo Alto, a town staple for the better part of a century, has newly handed off the baton to the innovators behind Pints of Joy. The transaction brings together traditional scoops with a dash of global zest, preserving a beloved neighborhood spot while adding a sprinkle of novelty. Palo Alto Online reports that the ice cream shop, which has stood along Middlefield Road for 70 years, is now under the management of Pints of Joy, which emerged during the pandemic and has brought a touch of international flair to the Bay Area's frozen dessert scene.

With Rick's Ice Cream changing ownership, Pints of Joy co-founders Arshiya Shaikh and Ketki Dandekar bring their fusion of flavors to the table, literally, without putting the shop's legacy in the deep freeze. "Our goal is to preserve everything customers love about Rick's, while enhancing the experience with the craft, flavors and standards Pints of Joy is known for," Dandekar told the Mercury News. Artisanal favorites like Computer Chip and Blue Moon will continue to be churned alongside Pints of Joy's beloved Alphonso Mango and Chili Lime Guava.

While nostalgia runs deep for Rick's traditional recipes, the shop's 48 flavors are now a blend of old and new, with about a third sourced from Pints of Joy's own recipe book. Despite the previous owners having faced a lawsuit over ADA compliance that expedited their decision to retire, Shaikh and Dandekar spotted an opportunity to graft their operation onto this Palo Alto institution. Pints of Joy's journey began when both women were laid off from their finance technology jobs and found a sweet spot in ice cream-making.

The integration of the two businesses also means that Rick's original flavors and Pints of Joy's creations are, despite not having planned any significant overhaul of the shop's ambiance, evenly dispersed throughout the cases. "We understand Rick’s has a very strong bond with the community over here," Shaikh said, noting they will aim to prioritize rotating the most popular flavors. The addition of nondairy options and new branding elements is on the agenda, too, as reported by Palo Alto Online.

Pints of Joy's Instagram account added a personal touch, warmly inviting the community to partake in their journey forward. "Here’s to familiar faces, new memories, and many scoops of joy ahead," posted @pintsofjoyicecream, a sentiment echoing the founders' vision for the continuation of a beloved local hangout spot.
