A pair of Peoria school buses packed with students on their way back from a field trip collided Friday afternoon, sending several people to the hospital and closing nearby roads while emergency crews rushed in. First responders and school staff quickly lined children up along the roadway for on-the-spot evaluations as crews helped pull students from the buses and checked over the visible damage. Officials said a small number of people were taken to a hospital for further evaluation.
Where and When
Peoria Fire crews were called around 2 p.m. yesterday to the area of 83rd Avenue and Sweetwater Avenue, north of Cactus Road, after two school buses crashed, according to ABC15. Video from the scene showed a Valley Del Sol Transportation bus with heavy front-end damage as firefighters and medics worked to get students to safety.
Students and School Response
Peoria police told reporters each bus was carrying roughly 40 to 45 students, about 90 children in all, and that two students and one adult were taken to a local hospital for evaluation, Arizona's Family reported. The charter school said the buses were returning from a scheduled field trip to the Pioneer Living History Museum. The Pioneer Living History Museum event calendar shows Academy of Math and Science Peoria listed at the museum on Friday. School officials said families of any students who required medical attention were contacted directly.
Scene, Damage and First Responders
Photos and video from the scene showed multiple children sitting or standing outside a bus while medics and school staff assessed students one by one, ABC15 reported. Peoria Fire‑Medical and police set up a command post nearby and moved students away from the roadway to a safer staging area while the buses and debris were checked over.
Road Closures and Investigation
Authorities closed southbound 83rd Avenue and both directions of Sweetwater Avenue while investigators documented the crash site and crews worked the scene, Arizona's Family said. Police have not released details about what caused the collision and said the investigation is ongoing.
