Phoenix residents experienced disruption on Tuesday morning as Glendale police officers were involved in a shooting near 29th Avenue and McDowell Road, FOX 10 Phoenix reports. According to Glendale Police, they were trying to apprehend a suspect linked to a domestic violence aggravated assault case when the incident escalated into violence.
Officers had been closely monitoring the individual suspected of the assault, their surveillance turned into a foot pursuit as he attempted to flee police presence, officials say during the chase it is alleged that the suspect brandished a firearm and pointed it at pursuing officers, which led to him being shot, this information was provided by Glendale Police spokesperson Jose Santiago. The injured suspect, described as a Hispanic man in his 40s, was transported to the hospital with injuries that could be potentially life-threatening.
As a result of the altercation, a stretch of McDowell Road was cordoned off from 28th to 31st Avenues, impacting traffic in the surrounding areas, residents were advised to find alternate routes while the investigation was underway. The disruption caused by the extensive crime scene and ongoing law enforcement activity underscored the severity of the situation which unfolded in the heart of Phoenix. In a statement obtained by Arizona's Family, they noted the presence of various unmarked law enforcement vehicles and police SUVs.
This particular event marks the second officer-involved shooting in Maricopa County and the entire state for the year 2026, as observed by the same source.
