Black Sails Coffee, the pirate-themed specialty roaster that started out on home equipment and at pop-ups, is settling into a permanent berth in Sacramento’s Oak Park. Co-owners Sean McCullough and Anthony Pulido have signed a lease for the former Naked Coffee roastery at 3527 Broadway and are eyeing a Valentine’s Day grand opening on Feb. 14, 2026. The new digs will give the brand a year-round base to roast, pull espresso shots and sell its beans under one roof.
From Pop-Ups To A Permanent Port
Before landing in Oak Park, Black Sails operated a temporary café at the Marketplace at Birdcage in Citrus Heights. That short-term lease wrapped up late last year, sending the crew on a monthslong hunt for a new home. The Birdcage stint helped build a local following but was always a limited engagement and ultimately was not renewed. As WhatNow Sacramento reported, the team kept the brand afloat by selling beans online and at markets while they scouted a permanent storefront.
Why Oak Park?
The new café will take over 3527 Broadway, a roastery space that most recently housed Naked Coffee, in a deal the owner offered as essentially turnkey, according to The Sacramento Bee. The Bee also notes that McCullough, who has roughly two decades of coffee experience, had previously leased an unfinished space in Gold River but shelved that project when permits and costs started stacking up. The outlet reports that Black Sails’ profile rose through competition medals and social media shoutouts, momentum the team now plans to carry into Oak Park.
Meet The Roaster
According to Black Sails Coffee, McCullough launched the company as a cottage operation, roasting on a small home machine before graduating to pop-ups and wholesale accounts. The brand describes him as an apprentice-turned-medalist with time logged as both a head roaster and a green-coffee buyer, and it emphasizes a commitment to small-batch sourcing and transparent roast profiles. That trajectory helps explain why moving into a ready-to-use Oak Park roastery looks like a natural next chapter.
What To Expect Inside
The Oak Park location is set to blend retail coffee bags, an espresso bar and on-site roasting under one compact roof. The Broadway facility’s existing setup should allow Black Sails to transition into service relatively quickly. The Sacramento Bee reports that the team is aiming for a Feb. 14 grand opening and intends to lean into small-batch offerings. Customers should look for a tight menu centered on espresso rather than a full-scale bakery case at launch.
How To Follow
Until the doors officially open, Black Sails plans to keep its beans in circulation through online sales and local markets. Opening-week details will be shared on the company’s website and social channels, according to Black Sails Coffee. Keep an eye on the Broadway storefront in Oak Park this winter as the roaster finishes dialing in equipment and posts its first official hours.
