A harrowing escape from a second-floor window was the avenue of safety for a 37-year-old resident during a two-alarm fire that engulfed their home in New Orleans. The incident occurred on Wednesday in the 3400 block of Milan Street, as confirmed by a press release from the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD). Nineteen units, with fifty-two firefighters responding, arrived within minutes of the call to confront the blaze, declared under control less than fifty minutes after it began.
According to the NOFD statement, the fire was reported at 12:01 p.m., and crews were dispatched immediately to address the situation. The first unit arrived at 12:07 p.m. to find the building in flames, prompting them to quickly request additional support. The parents of the injured man, the homeowners, reported to firefighters that the fire was likely caused by a space heater. Their son had managed to quickly jump to safety, sustaining injuries to his feet before being transported by New Orleans Emergency Medical Services to a local hospital.
Reported civilian injuries were confined to the resident who took the daring leap. "The homeowners told NOFD personnel that just prior to being transported to an area hospital for injuries to his feet, their son explained to them that the space heater he was using started the fire," the NOFD's press release stated. Firefighters worked diligently to contain the flames, preventing it from spreading beyond the initial structure, thereby safeguarding neighboring dwellings from significant damage.
The destroyed property, a single-family residence, stood in tight quarters between two occupied multi-unit buildings, both of which sustained only mild to moderate damage from the intense heat. The American Red Cross has been engaged to assist the three individuals displaced by the fire with their basic needs. The NOFD will endeavor to formally confirm the cause of the fire, with the preliminary investigation suggesting the involvement of a space heater.
For the NOFD, the effort on Milan Street exemplified the routine heroism of their vocation, ending an otherwise harrowing episode with no further injuries and minimal destruction to surrounding edifices. The incident, though harrowing for those involved, serves as another stark reminder of the dangers household items like space heaters can present if not carefully monitored. The investigation into the exact cause remains underway.
