The Sacramento region is actively celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a series of events across the city, the most prominent of which is the annual March for the Dream. The march, now in its 44th year, commenced this morning at Sacramento City College, as reported by CBS Sacramento. Participants are expected to in numbers span into the hundreds, if not thousands, journeying the symbolic path of the civil rights movement.
Adding to the march's significance, an "Extra Mile" portion was held earlier, meant for leaders, stepping off from the Oak Park Community Center at 8:30 a.m., leading up to the main event. Marchers taking on the traditional route set out from Hughes Stadium at 9 a.m., following a path with several road closures in place to accommodate the turnout.
In addition to the Sacramento marches, KCRA lists a host of events celebrating the day, such as the Sixth Annual South Sacramento Martin Luther King Jr Community Celebration, with festivities including a decorated vehicle caravan. The Luther Burbank High School Auditorium was the starting point for these celebrations, commencing at the early hours of 8 a.m.
Not forgetting the youth and the future they hold, the Stockton Unity March and youth program aimed to assemble community members on issues of today, accompanying their march with activities from noon to 4 p.m. at the Stockton Civic Auditorium. As reported by KCRA, other offerings included an exposition focused on diversity after the main march in Sacramento, fostering community engagement through educational content, live music, and a variety of vendor booths to service various needs.
While the focus of the day is deeply rooted in honoring Dr. King's vision, this year marked a change in free access to public spaces commemorating the civil rights leader. Governor Gavin Newsom announced that all would be welcomed to visit hundreds of California state parks for free today, replacing the Martin Luther King Jr. Day and Juneteenth free entry list with Constitution Day and Flag Day in the previous year.
