A lawsuit has been filed by a Salt Lake County family against popular online gaming platform Roblox and the social media app Discord, claiming that these platforms enabled an adult sexual predator to exploit and harass their 15-year-old son. According to ABC4, the family alleges that Roblox and Discord have failed to put in place sufficient safety measures to protect minors, potentially placing financial gain over child safety.

In the legal documents, which were filed in California, where Roblox is based, the family argues that the companies operate in a way that could easily allow sexual predators to groom and exploit underage users. FOX 13 reported that the lawsuit cites an incident where the predator, disguised as a peer, "groomed [the boy], exploiting his age and vulnerability to build a false emotional connection with him."

The plaintiffs are further claiming that both Roblox and Discord market to children without undertaking adequate safeguards. Specifically, the lawsuit accuses Roblox of not properly verifying users' ages, allowing sexually explicit content through its user-created minigames, and failing to prevent communications between adults and minors under 13 until November 2024. Technology has begun to adapt, with Roblox introducing age verification tools, but the family argues in court papers obtained by ABC4 that these measures are too little, too late.

Roblox, described by the company as a place where millions of people create and play, claims to have had 111 million daily users, as mentioned in the coverage by FOX 13. The growth of the platform is under scrutiny in the lawsuit, with the family alleging that the rapid expansion comes at the expense of child protection. Further disconcerting details from a FOX 13 Facebook post echo the family's sentiment that "his life will never be the same" following the alleged incidents.
