In an initiative to honor the legacy of Rosa Parks and her essential role in the Civil Rights Movement, the North County Transit District (NCTD) of San Diego will offer free rides throughout its network on February 4 to commemorate what would have been her birthday.
This tribute marks the latest effort to reflect on Parks’ act of defiance in 1955 when she famously refused to relinquish her bus seat, fueling the movement towards desegregation and setting a precedent that would echo through generations. Her courage not only sparked a boycott but a nationwide push for equal rights across the corridors of public transit and beyond. Shawn M. Donaghy, NCTD's Chief Executive Officer, per the North County Transit District, attested to the gravity of Parks’ contribution, proclaiming, “Rosa Parks’ courage was integral to advancing the fight for Civil Rights in our country,” and he affirmed NCTD’s commitment to ensuring “the right to equal access for all on public transit”.
This year’s “Transit Equity Day”, which has been observed in certain regions since 2018 and will see its fourth year of NCTD involvement, is part of a larger national endeavor, the NCTD is joining forces with other public transportation agencies to offer this act of remembrance and celebration, encompassing all NCTD transportation modes including the COASTER, SPRINTER, BREEZE, FLEX, NCTD+, and LIFT services. Mimicking the smooth passing of trains on tracks, riders will be able to transition seamlessly through their travels without the exchange of currency or swipe of a card, a subtle nod to Parks' unrelenting stance for equality.
