If you've strolled down Market Street lately, it's hard not to notice the vivid new faces staring back at you, thanks to the San Francisco Arts Commission's latest outdoor gallery installment. The "Layers of the Mission: A Celebration of Memory and Resilience" poster series by local talent Adrian Arias has transformed 15 SFMTA transit shelters into a showcase of cultural pride and historical homage. As part of the Art on Market Street Poster Series, Arias' work is anchored in the theme of "Now & Then: Living Memories," and can be caught between 7th and Steuart streets through March 2026.
Adrian Arias' concept for the series utilizes the imagery of the Forever Stamp® to amplify everyday symbols of the Mission District's identity—translating the personal into the monumental. Director of Cultural Affairs Ralph Remington shared, "These vibrant illustrations help transform Market Street into an outdoor gallery of remembrance and recognition, inviting visitors and local residents alike to reflect on their memories of the Mission, reminding us that San Francisco's identity is built from the everyday legacies of our communities," in a statement obtained by the San Francisco Arts Commission.
Arias' series presents an extraordinary, visual narrative that pays tribute to key cultural touchstones and community icons. Viewers can expect to see pieces dedicated to the Danza Azteca, the noble simplicity of El Paletero, or the Ice Cream Vendor, the nurturance of La Señora de las Flores, the charm of Papel Picado embodied by Herminia Albarrán, the traditions upheld by Día de los Muertos & René Yañez, and finally, the street swagger of Lowriders & Roberto Hernández.
The artist behind the illustrative journey, Arias, is a multifaceted creator—a visual artist, poet, performer, curator, activist, and cultural promoter. With his roots firmly planted in social justice, racial equity, climate awareness, peace, beauty, and hope, his work spans across various platforms to bring to life narratives that reflect community involvement. "My work frequently engages community collaboration and public space as a platform for cultural visibility and storytelling," Adrian Arias told the San Francisco Arts Commission. Other artists featured in the 2026 Art on Market Street Poster Series include Amir Khadar, Colin Kimzey, and Vida Kuang, rounding out a year that promises to celebrate San Francisco's underappreciated histories.
