A 31-year-old San Jose man was killed yesterday when his motorcycle went off a steep embankment along a notoriously tricky stretch of State Highway 9 in Santa Cruz County, authorities said.
The solo crash was reported at about 5:54 PM Emergency crews responded but pronounced the rider dead at the scene. Officials have not yet released his name, saying they are still working to notify his family.
According to the SFGATE, the man was heading south on a Suzuki when he lost control, crashed and went down an embankment. The California Highway Patrol said the cause of the wreck remains under investigation.
Crash Site And Past Incidents
The deadly crash happened on Highway 9 just south of State Highway 35, along a narrow, twisty corridor through the Santa Cruz Mountains. Drivers know this stretch for its tight turns and limited visibility, conditions that can become even more unforgiving in low light or wet weather.
The area has seen fatal wrecks before. Last July, two motorcyclists were killed in a head-on collision on the same piece of road, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
Why Motorcyclists Are Vulnerable
Motorcycles represent only a small slice of traffic on American roads, yet riders make up a disproportionate share of traffic deaths, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety notes. IIHS reports more than 6,300 motorcyclist fatalities nationwide in 2023 and says riders are far more likely than people in passenger vehicles to be killed in a crash on a per-mile basis.
Investigation Ongoing
The California Highway Patrol is still sorting through what led up to Thursday’s crash and has not released additional details about why the rider lost control. Investigators have not yet determined whether speed, impairment or road conditions played a role, and the cause remains under review, according to SFGATE.
Authorities say more information will be released as the CHP completes its investigation. This story will be updated if new details are made public.
