In a significant crackdown on illegal firearms activities, the San José Police Department's specialized Gun and Hazardous Offender Suppression Team (GHOST) has brought down a major gun trafficking operation, as detailed in a recent press release by the SJPD. According to the department's statement, detectives acted upon a tip-off from the Santa Clara County Adult Probation Office to investigate and impede the importation, manufacturing, sales, and distribution of a diverse array of firearms, including machine guns and so-called 'Glock Switches'.
The SJPD's extensive inquiry led to the identification of Kenneth Tafoya as the central figure in this illicit scheme. Over the period of February to November 2025, he is accused of importing or manufacturing at least 1,700 machine gun conversion devices, amid other serious weapons offenses, thus becoming a focal point for the San José Police Department. On January 14, Tafoya was apprehended in Stockton, CA, by a coalition of law enforcement bodies, including the California Highway Patrol and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, alongside local units.
During the subsequent examination of Tafoya’s properties, officers retrieved a diverse collection of firearms and related contraband—seizing a shotgun, a rifle, a pistol, one machine gun conversion device, ammunition, precursor materials for firearm manufacturing, and magazines, as well as a palette of spent casings. Following the arrest, Santa Clara County Main Jail became Tafoya's new holding facility as he awaits legal proceedings for the multitude of firearms-related accusations leveled against him. "The importation, manufacturing, and sale of illegal firearms will not be tolerated in our community," declared SJPD Chief Paul Joseph.
Santa Clara County District Attorney Jeff Rosen, in expressing respect for the multi-agency coordination, stated via the San José Police Department news, "I am grateful to the collaboration of our justice partners, including San Jose PD, CHP, ATF, Santa Clara County Probation, and the Gun Violence Task Force."
