Ways to participate beyond buying a ticket
This year's Bay Area Theatre Week includes a BATW Passport program that encourages audiences to collect stamps from participating theaters across five regions — San Francisco, the Peninsula, South Bay, North Bay, and East Bay. According to Theatre Bay Area, participants receive prizes after collecting stamps, including a limited-edition pin and a complementary one-year audience membership.
Free programming is part of the celebration as well. Per 48 Hills, the schedule includes open rehearsals, discounted classes, special events, and a kick-off event or social mixer. These offerings provide free and affordable ways for audiences to sample theater.
The productions follow different calendars
The earliest of the four highlighted productions is Marin Shakespeare Company's Julius Caesar, running Aug. 14 through Sept. 13 at the Forest Meadows Amphitheatre in San Rafael. According to MarinArts.org, the outdoor staging reinterprets the classical political tragedy within a Cold War setting.
In Berkeley, Royal Underground Theatre Company is staging POTUS at the Live Oak Theater from Sept. 11 through Sept. 26, according to BroadwayWorld. Directed by Anna Oglesby-Smith, the political farce follows seven women dealing with a crisis or catastrophe caused by the president.
American Conservatory Theater's North by Northwest opens its 2026-27 season at San Francisco's Toni Rembe Theater, with performances scheduled Sept. 22 through Oct. 18. The production is described in the Chronicle's reporting as a Hitchcock adaptation and, per Theatre Bay Area's event listings, is adapted and directed by Emma Rice.
Eureka Day runs Sept. 24 through Oct. 8. Directed by Lisa Mallette, the production centers on a progressive private school board in Berkeley facing a public health crisis during a mumps outbreak; Visit San Jose describes the schedule and production.
The promotion's regional framework
Bay Area Theatre Week runs Sept. 10 through Sept. 20, giving theatergoers access to discounts of up to 60% off regular ticket prices during a 10-day, region-wide promotion. The Chronicle's report notes the discounts and details the handful of marquee productions anchoring the celebration.
The event is hosted by Theatre Bay Area, which, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, is a 50-year-old nonprofit marking its founding in 1976. Theatre Bay Area is described as the largest arts service organization of its kind and represents more than 200 member companies and over 3,000 individual performing artists across the region. Sean Fenton, in comments carried by the Chronicle, said the event offers “a warm invitation to people around the bay to sample and discover a theater gem, perhaps in their own backyards.”
The backdrop for the discounts
The discounts and free events offer affordable access to the region's stages. Senate Bill 1116 includes the Performing Arts Equitable Payroll Fund.
According to the City of San José, the city announced more than $4.7 million in grant funding for over 100 San José-based cultural events on Aug. 13, 2025. The City of San José also awards Operating Grants to arts and cultural organizations; the 2026 application deadline was February 13, 2026, by 4:59 PM. The City of San José Cultural Affairs department maintains a list of cultural facilities serving San José. City of San José plans and reports describe an effort to strengthen the arts and cultural sector through economic development and the creative industry.
