The San José Police Department is currently investigating the first fatal traffic collision of 2026, which claimed the life of an adult male pedestrian yesterday. According to the information released by the department, officers responded to a call at around 6:03 PM near the intersection of South Bascom Avenue and Borello Drive. A welfare check revealed that the man's injuries were consistent with being struck by a vehicle.
The SJPD's preliminary investigation indicates that an unidentified vehicle traveling southbound on South Bascom Avenue struck the pedestrian as he walked in the roadway outside any marked crosswalk. After the collision, the vehicle implicated in the incident fled the scene before the authorities could arrive.
Emergency services rushed the victim to a local hospital, but despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead. This event marks San José’s first pedestrian fatality of the year, immersed in a wider narrative of traffic safety and hit-and-run incidents plaguing urban roadways. As the investigation progresses, the suspect and their vehicle remain unidentified, with law enforcement calling upon the community for leads.
The Police Department has made a public plea for information that could help resolve this case. "Anyone with information on this investigation is urged to contact Detective DelliCarpini #4103 of the San José Police Department's Traffic Investigations Unit," stated the public announcement. Tips can be submitted anonymously through the P3TIPS mobile application, via a phone call to the tip line, or online through the Silicon Valley Crime Stoppers’ website. Notably, informants may qualify for a cash reward if their information leads to an arrest through the Crime Stoppers Program.
The identity of the deceased will be disclosed by the Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner upon completion of the necessary processes.
