In a recent operation by the San Jose Police Department, a routine traffic stop turned into a significant weapons seizure on the streets of our city. According to a social media post by the San Jose Police Department, the event unfolded just after 10 PM on Sunday, with officers conducting what began as a standard traffic violation inspection at the intersection of Leigh Avenue and Scott Street. The turn of events led to a more serious discovery when officers found an illegal firearm hidden within the vehicle.
The traffic stop arose from the department's proactive policing efforts, which the department has been keen to highlight, with the two-officer patrol unit delving deeper into the stop after developing probable cause. A thorough search of the automobile unveiled an unloaded AK-style short-barreled rifle that had its serial number purposefully altered—a telltale sign of illegal activities. Accompanying this discovery was a 30-round magazine loaded with live ammunition, dangerously poised for potential use.
"Proactive patrols like this remove dangerous firearms from our streets and keep our neighborhoods safe, helping prevent violence before it happens," the San Jose Police Department stated in the post. Indeed, without interventions such as these, the potential for violence escalates, posing a direct threat to the safety of local residents and the community at large.
The individual connected with the illegal firearm was arrested and booked into jail on multiple weapons violations. The identity of the suspect has not been disclosed at this time.
